Why I Dance: A Journey of Purpose, Passion, and Perseverance
Why do I dance?
The answer is simple, yet profound:
I dance for myself.
Not for applause.
Not for fame.
Not for validation.
I dance for the deep, unshakable connection it gives me to my soul.
The Path That Shaped Me
My journey has never been smooth. It’s been carved by hard work, rejection, heartbreak, and resilience. Every challenge has shaped me into the artist and human I am today.
I carry immense gratitude for the legendary Gurus of the Sri Lankan dance world who guided me. Their warmth, discipline, passion, and relentless dedication are etched into my being. I am proud to be their student, and I hope I’ve made them proud in return.
Lessons from the Journey: For Every Aspiring Artist
- Wait for your turn. Don’t chase fame, chase growth.
- Hard work pays off. Move toward your dreams with courage and determination.
- Rejection is not failure. It’s a stepping stone to rise stronger.
- Build your skills beyond dance. Learn to collaborate, communicate, and create with others.
- Observe deeply. You don’t need to absorb everything; choose what serves your path.
- Be kind. Support, uplift, and encourage others in your field.
- Appreciate openly. Critique honestly but always in person, with respect.
- Care for your body and mind. Your well-being is your foundation.
- Move slowly. Think, listen, pause. Let your imagination lead.
- See the big picture. Break it down into pieces, work on each one, then bring them all together.
- Find your person. A true friend in the industry, someone who challenges, supports, and celebrates with you. Someone to share coffee, ideas, and laughter.
A New Chapter Begins
This is just the beginning of a series where I’ll reflect on the people, lessons, and experiences that shaped my artistic life. To my Gurus, this first episode is for you.
With love, respect, and endless gratitude,
Dhanushka Seneviratne
